Multiple Extractions
Multiple Extractions Post-Operative Instructions
Undergoing multiple tooth extractions is a major dental procedure that requires careful attention to promote healing and ensure a smooth recovery. Please read and follow these post-extraction care instructions closely to reduce complications and support your healing process.
Bleeding
Some bleeding is expected after multiple extractions. To manage it, gently bite down on clean gauze pads over each extraction site for about 30 minutes. Replace the gauze as needed until the bleeding stops. Avoid forceful rinsing or spitting, as it can dislodge blood clots and cause further bleeding.
Pain Management
You may feel discomfort or soreness once the anesthesia wears off. Take any prescribed pain medications as instructed by your oral surgeon. Over-the-counter pain relief options like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate pain and reduce swelling. Avoid aspirin, as it can increase bleeding.
Swelling
Swelling is common after multiple extractions, peaking within 48 hours. To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack or cold compress to your cheeks or jawline for 20-minute intervals, with 20-minute breaks. Keeping your head elevated while resting can further reduce swelling.
Diet
For the first few days post-surgery, stick to a soft or liquid diet to avoid irritating the extraction sites. Nutrient-rich foods like soups, smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs are ideal. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that could irritate or cause discomfort.
Oral Hygiene
Proper oral hygiene is essential to prevent infection and promote healing. Gently brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush, avoiding the extraction sites. Rinse your mouth several times a day with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) to help keep the area clean and aid healing.
Rest and Activity
Rest as much as possible in the days following surgery to support recovery. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and bending over, as they can increase swelling and discomfort. Give your body time to heal by taking it easy.
Medications
Take any prescribed medications, including antibiotics if given, as directed by your oral surgeon. If you experience nausea or vomiting after taking medication, contact your oral surgeon for advice.
Follow-up Appointment
Be sure to attend your follow-up appointment with your oral surgeon to track your healing progress and ensure proper recovery. If you experience persistent bleeding, severe pain, swelling, or any concerning symptoms, contact our office immediately for further evaluation.
