Wisdom Tooth Removal
Wisdom Tooth Removal Post-Operative Instructions
Congratulations on taking a step towards better oral health with your wisdom tooth removal! To help ensure a smooth recovery, please carefully read through the following instructions. If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to reach out to our office for assistance.
Bleeding
Some bleeding is normal after wisdom tooth extraction. To help control bleeding, gently bite down on clean gauze pads over the extraction sites for about 30 minutes. Replace the gauze as needed until the bleeding stops.
Pain Management
Mild to moderate discomfort may occur once the anesthesia wears off. Take your prescribed pain medication as directed by your oral surgeon. You may also use over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Avoid aspirin as it can increase bleeding.
Swelling
Swelling is common after wisdom tooth removal and generally peaks within 48 hours. To reduce swelling, apply an ice pack or cold compress to the affected area for 20 minutes at a time, with 20-minute breaks in between.
Diet
Stick to soft or liquid foods for the first few days after surgery to avoid irritating the extraction sites. Foods like soups, smoothies, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and scrambled eggs are ideal. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that may cause discomfort.
Oral Hygiene
Good oral hygiene is essential to promote healing and prevent infection. Brush your teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush, avoiding the extraction sites. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) several times a day to help keep the area clean.
Physical Activity
Avoid physical activity and strenuous exercise for the first few days to minimize swelling and discomfort. Rest as much as possible, and avoid bending over or lifting heavy objects.
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol
Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products for at least 72 hours after surgery, as they can hinder healing and increase complications. Also, avoid alcohol consumption during the recovery period.
Follow-Up Appointment
Be sure to attend your scheduled follow-up appointment with your oral surgeon to check on your healing and have any stitches removed if necessary. If you experience prolonged bleeding, severe pain, or other concerning symptoms, contact our office right away for further guidance.
By following these post-operative care instructions, you’ll help ensure a smooth and successful recovery. Take your time and be patient with your healing process. If you have any questions or need further assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out to our office. We’re here to support you throughout your recovery.
